Director Gus Van Sant’s breakthrough film about a band of losers traveling around the 70s-era Pacific Northwest knocking off pharmacies and hospitals to support their habits was at once funny and tragic and about the farthest thing from a ringing endorsement of the druggie lifestyle imaginable.
