Ah, Russell Crowe… Gladiator notwithstanding (and face it – he was epic in that movie) you either love him or hate him. Yet as the genius but deeply troubled mathematician at the heart of A Beautiful Mind, Crowe made a bundle of tics, twitches and thousand-yard stares weirdly mesmerising. The 2001 best picture Oscar was given from the get-go.
