The Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion, or SPECTRE, is an apolitical terrorist organization that opposes secret agent James Bond in Ian Fleming’s original novels and the subsequent films.

First appearing in Fleming’s 1961 novel Thunderball and mentioned briefly in 1962’s Dr. No film, SPECTRE is led by criminal genius Ernst Stavro Blofeld, played variously by Donald Pleasance, Telly Savalas, and Charles Grey in the films.

SPECTRE’s last appearance came in the non-canon Bond film Never Say Never Again (1983) which marked original Bond Sean Connery’s last appearance in the role.
