As played by Ian McKellen.

Once again picking up his Lord of the Rings staff, Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, one of the most powerful wizards in Middle-earth. The Hobbit is a prequel, so naturally he's yet to hit the bleach bottle and become -- ancient spoiler alert! -- Gandalf the White, retaining his shabby robes and salt 'n' pepper beard for the famed role. Though he voiced his concerns about the huge delays suffered by The Hobbit, McKellen confirmed in February 2011 that Gandalf would be needed on set, albeit with sizeable breaks. These breaks may be reflective of his departure from Bilbo's journey to uncover the truth behind an ancient evil lurking in the darkest corners of Middle-earth.
