Urrrrrr, this is sort of awkward. At the same award show as the Eminem/Triumph/Moby ménage à trois, Michael Jackson was also celebrating his 44th birthday. Since MTV have practically built their network on the back of Jackson's revolutionary music videos, Britney Spears took to the stage to present the King of Pop with a birthday cake but, as she welcomed him onstage, referred to him as the "artist of the millennium." Michael Jackson rightly assumed he was being awarded an MTV Artist of the Millennium VMA (surely they wouldn't have hauled his legendary ass onstage for a slice of cake?) and launched into an acceptance speech of how honoured he was. To make matters worse, he even mistook the cake topper as his trophy, although everyone went along with it and the confused audience still gave him a standing ovation.
