One of the defining images of statuesque actress Sigourney Weaver’s first major film role, playing Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott’s Alien (1979), was seeing her strip down to her underwear just before the xenomorph comes in for his final attack. But the now 63-year-old actress has generally avoided exploitative roles, turning Ripley into a movie icon in three sequels, and earning many accolades, including three Oscar nominations and a BAFTA win in 1997. Equally adept at comedy (Ghostbusters, Paul) and drama (Gorillas in the Mist, Death and the Maiden), Weaver played a key role in her Aliens director James Cameron’s hit film Avatar (2009).
