Lee Daniels’ Oscar-tipped biopic The Butler will be served up to cinema goers this week. The film, which counts Robin Williams, Mariah Carey and Oprah Winfrey amongst its galaxy of stars; is a historical drama based on the life of Eugene Allen, a Butler who served under four Presidents during his 34-year stint in The White House.

Forest Whitaker takes on the part of the titular manservant, a character who’s set to stake his claim as one of cinema’s most iconic servants. But he’s not the first. In fact from butlers to nannies via maids, governesses and even the odd caretaker; movie history is littered with memorable servants. So in honour of Lee Daniels’ The Butler, join us as we don some white gloves to lift the cloche on Hollywood’s most iconic hired help.
