The “ugly American” stereotype is in full effect in the Ridley Scott drama Black Rain. Michael Douglas plays Nick Conklin, an NYPD detective tasked with escorting up-and-coming yakuza Sato (Yusaku Matsuda) back to Japan. Conklin and his partner Charlie (Andy Garcia) do just that but inadvertently allow the murderous thug to escape. Conklin and Charlie have their guns taken away from them by local police and are reminded that they are merely “interested observers” in the hunt for Sato. But that does not prevent Conklin from employing a little NYPD brutality to interrogate suspects.
