Emmanuelle Riva (Three Colours: Blue) stars as the unnamed female half of the interracial couple at the heart of first-time director Allan Resnais’s Hiroshima mon amour. Eiji Okada (The X from Outer Space) plays the married Japanese architect with whom the French actress, in Hiroshima to make a film “about peace,” has a brief affair. Fairly devoid of conventional plotting (French new wave filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard called it the first film without any cinematic references), Hiroshima mon amour follows the memories of “She” as she remembers her love affair with “Him,” comparing the course of love to the Hiroshima bombing.
