Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is the bored and increasingly isolated wife of a celebrity photographer, played by Giovanni Ribisi. Finding herself mostly alone in Tokyo while her husband works and flirts with American actress Kelly (Anna Faris), Charlotte strikes up a friendship with Bob Harris (Bill Murray), a faded movie star in town to shoot a whiskey commercial. Together they find solace and fun in a city where they do not speak the language but manage to find a measure of (platonic) happiness anyway. Tokyo is very much an alien landscape in this Sofia Coppola-directed film.
