Snyder’s second bite at the comic book cherry would prove to be altogether less successful than his previous experience with 300. Despite an enormous budget and an even bigger marketing push, his adaptation of Watchmen failed to live up to expectations; generating a lukewarm response from critics and audiences alike. The film had been stuck in development hell for decades with a string of A-list directors trying and failing to condense Alan Moore’s unruly text into a two-hour movie. Snyder at least got the project off of the ground. But beyond a few stylistic touches (most notably in the movie’s superb intro), the director was perhaps guilty of sticking too dutifully to his source material.
