GO GOA GONE: Rom-Com star Saif Ali Khan forays into Zom-Com!
The promos of GO GOA GONE that were released few days ago have gone viral, and the catalysis for the promos going viral is the fact that it is Saif Ali Khan who is enacting the lead role in this zom-com. Directed by the duo of SHOR IN THE CITY directors Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, and being produced by Illuminati Films, Saif Ali Khan's home production indeed is going to cement his position as the star who does not think twice before experimenting in the genre of comedy.
If one were to rewind into the career growth of Saif Ali Khan from the time he made his debut in AASHIQ AWARA, one thing that has emerged as the stark motif is the fact is that consciously or sub-consciously he has created a new frontier of romantic comedy with each of his films that he has enacted in. Saif Ali Khan emerged as a practitioner of rom-com or romantic comedy with DIL CHAHTA HAI, and kept on perfecting it through scores of films that he did including KAL HO NA HO, LOVE AAJ KAL, OMKARA and COKCTAIL and the genre in a way turned out to be genric genre for all. Saif popularized rom-com genre to the hilt and till today filmmakers easily bank on this genre and consider it as safe bet.
As a matter of fact to carve the niche for himself, Saif has not thought twice and transgressed the conventional limits associated with enactment of comic scenes, like enacting the scenes of suggestive homosexuality in KAL HO NA HO, to resorting to crude rustic comedy in OMKARA where he really deconstructed his urbane and sophisticated image and to dressing in drag as he did in COCKTAIL.
For GO GOA GONE Saif Ali Khan has used prosthetics to create the effect. Horror as a genre has been one of the safest bets to create a hit at the box office, and if humor is interspersed into it, the success is rather ensured. Another determining factor that has been catalyst in establishing the image of Saif Ali Khan as the rom-com star has been the fact that most of the films which have carved his image as the rom-com star are those which have been produced by him in one way or the other. It definitely gives him ample room to experiment. GO GOA GONE being his home production again, one would see ample experimentation in the film, and the element of shock as well, as it is evident from the promos where loads of cusp words have been used.
Saif Ali Khan also needs to be credited about the fact that he has not forgotten his roots of belonging to Delhi and he uses the reference points of Delhi in one form or the other with panache through all the films that he has produced and acted in, and GO GOA GONE is no exception. As a matter of fact the Punjabi humor in its different forms of crudeness that has now become a staple diet of Hindi films owes its popularity to Saif Ali Khan who injected this template into film making in subtle manner.
One only hopes that GO GOA GONE would indeed exorcise the genre of horror films, and with the zom-com that it professes to be, horror films as a combination of horror and humor would gravitate to 'A' category and much credit for it would go to Saif Ali Khan.
