Amitabh Bachchan to be honoured at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is delighted to announce that India's most celebrated superstar, Amitabh Bachchan will attend the closing night of The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne as special guest where he will also be honored with IFFM's 'International Screen Icon' award, by the Victorian Government, and the 'Ambassador of Goodwill' award from the Vice Chancellor of La Trobe University during his stay in Melbourne. The festival will also host a retrospective of Amitabh Bachchan's films at the city's prestigious Federation Square in his honour.
An annual celebration of Indian cinema in all its forms - The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, hosted by Mind Blowing Films under the guidance of Festival Director -Mitu Bhowmick Lange takes the show on the road from Hindi blockbusters to regional and art-house in Melbourne along with award-winning film makers and the biggest stars of Indian cinema as special guests with master classes from industry experts and an All Australia Bollywood Dance Competition, judged by Farah Khan with Prabhudeva as the special guest
For the second year, National award winner Vidya Balan returns to Melbourne as the festival's ambassador, which commences from 3rd May, marking exactly a 100 years of Indian Cinema. The 2013 festival will celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema and will showcase and provide audiences some of the most celebrated films of the last century with India's first ever film - RAJA HARISHCHANDRA as its opening night film
While Mrs. Pamela Chopra will also be present on the occasion to accept a lifetime achievement award for the late Mr Yash Chopra. The award will acknowledge his contribution to Cinema and his special relationship with Victoria. Travelling from the Cannes Film Festival, Mr. Bachchan will officially close the Festival on the 22 May at the screening of his ground-breaking super hit DEEWAR.
IFFM Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said, "Mr. Bachchan is the premier ambassador for our cherished film industry. For over four decades his ground breaking roles have nourished a billion souls .There is no greater way to build bridges between our two cultures. It is a great honour to have him here and to celebrate his wonderful film legacy in this centenary year of Indian cinema."
Says Minister Hon' Louise Asher, "Mr. Bachchan is one of the greatest and most influential actors in the history of Indian cinema. Mr. Bachchan's attendance at the festival will not only enhance the global appeal of Victoria as a culturally diverse location, but also increase the visibility of Victoria as a tourism destination."
If that wasn't all, in honor of his visit, La Trobe University is also naming a Ph.d Scholarship after Mr. Bachchan, calling it the "Shri Amitabh Bachchan Scholarship " in a subject or stream close to Mr. Bachchan's heart.
