GO GOA GONE starts well, GIPPI is dull!
This Friday saw two diverse releases, Illuminati Films' and EROS International's zom-com GO GOA GONE and Karan Johar's coming-of-age, teen venture GIPPI. The opening of both the films were as per expectations.
The Krishna DK and Raj Nidimoru directed Saif Ali Khan starrer, GO GOA GONE, boasting of Hollywood style production values and humour, was never expected to open like Saif's other commercial ventures (read COCKTAIL & RACE 2) where he essayed the main lead! The film saw a 30-50 percent start, during the opening shows with the higher percentages coming from up-market metro multiplexes. The start can be termed as good, considering the relatively new genre for Hindi cinema. In fact, by the latter shows the film hit the 65-70 percent mark at the youth frequenting multiplexes of many urban centers. Given the fact that the target audience is liking the film and most of the critics have given it good to decent reviews, barring a few (for whom the humour was too cerebral), GO GOA GONE is likely to emerge a profitable venture for all concerned.
The other release of the week, GIPPI, which saw a limited release, fared very much like last week's BOMBAY TALKIES, with an opening in the range of 15-20 percent, and a decent pick up towards the evening shows. With the critics praising the film, the low budget GIPPI is also expected to pull through at the ticket window.
Meanwhile the major release of last week, Sanjay Gupta's SHOOTOUT AT WADALA, netted 43-45 crore (to be validated) during the opening week from India. But the winner of May continues to be the first super-hit of 2013, Bhushan Kumar and Vishesh Films' AASHIQUI 2, which saw a good second week (despite SHOOTOUT AT WADALA) and has netted in excess of 50 crore (to be validated) in two weeks from India.
