Deepika Padukone aims at a hat-trick of 100 crore hits
Her RACE 2 stays on to be the only (almost) 100 crore hit of the year so far and can be rest assured to make it two in a row with YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI which is looking ultra-hot. After enjoying a consistent run at the movies for over half a decade, being single and also reuniting with Shahrukh Khan with CHENNAI EXPRESS, she is poised to make a hat-trick soon. However before that it is her love story with Ranbir Kapoor which is making news, especially for its chartbuster songs as well as an element of 'reuniting after a heart break' adding on to the marketing pitch.
"Yes, the two films are of course looking good. However, eventually it is the content that would work eventually," says an industry insider, "Even RACE 2 didn't reach the 100 crore mark without hiccups. Even as the film was minting money in the opening weekend, average reviews and mixed word of mouth meant that there were some scares thrown in this journey. There is a lot that is required by a film to score a century. Just a popular pairing isn't enough."
However, with Deepika consolidating her place in the Top-5 actresses that Bollywood boasts of today, she can be expected to pick and choose those films that allow her performance to do the talking as well, especially when it comes to a love story, case in point being COCKTAIL.
"Deepika has been humble enough not to acknowledge the kind of contribution that she has been making consistently in her films," a filmmaker says, "Time and again, she turns out to be a spot bright enough to bring in audience and her 'party girl' image coupled with the fact that she is plastered all over in the promotion of a film, be it a multi-starrer or a two-heroine film, is a reason good enough for audience to step in."
We look forward to that as well.
