Vidya Balan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan come together for Cannes-India dinner

The Cannes-India dinner witnessed the coming together of two of the brightest stars of Indian cinema under one roof, the Electrolux Agora pavilion in Cannes village. The dinner was hosted by Gilles Jacob, the president of the Cannes Film Festival, and Thierry Fremaux, the Delegate General. Aurelie Filippetti, the French Culture Minister and Dr. K. Chiranjeevi, the Tourism Minister of India, were also present and both of them made important announcements in their speeches. The Indian contingent of filmmakers, film stars, actors, journalists, and government officials was present there in full strength for the celebratory dinner in the honour of the 100 years of Indian cinema.

However all eyes were on Vidya Balan who is part of the prestigious and powerful Cannes Competition Jury this year. She was attired in a dignified golden ghaghra-choli-dupatta ensemble and moved around the venue accepting the greetings of one and all. It seemed everyone in the Pavilion wanted to talk to her and she did not disappoint. She freely interacted with the people with genuine warmth and exchanged pleasantries and greetings. The surprise appearance of Aishwarya Rai in the party added further glitz and glamour to the occasion. She was in a kind of shimmering and shining Cleopatra attire and looked stunning and gorgeous. Aishwarya and Vidya shared the same table, which instantly became the centre of all attention.

One of the highlights of the evening was a sitar recital by Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of the late Pt. Ravi Shankar. She played three brief music pieces representing different ragas including Keervani and Khamaj. One of the pieces was a song "Kaise Din Beete, Kaise Beeti Ratiyan" from the Hrishikesh Mukherjee film ANURADHA (1960) the music of which was composed by her legendary father.
