Is the spark missing from Ranbir Kapoor & Madhuri Dixit's YJHD item song Ghaghra?
Ranbir Kapoor may have realized his childhood dream of dancing against Madhuri Dixit in his latest film YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI, but is the song- 'Ghagra', the latest offering from YEH JAWAANI HAI DEEWANI in the same league- vintage league for which Madhuri Dixit has been famous, and a league which nobody could breach into?
Well, being an ardent Madhuri Dixit fan from the time when she danced into our hearts with 'Ek Do Teen' which perhaps started the trend of throwing coins on to the songs in recent memory, till- 'Humpe Ye Kisne Hara rangdaaala', as also songs from AAJA NACHLE, Madhuri Dixit never floundered to conquer the heart of her fans through her dance numbers. Therefore when there was a buzz in the market that she has been roped in through an item song in YJHD and when it was released for viewing, indeed it has been a rather dampener of the sort.
The dampener is primarily owing to the fact that the movements in the song do not carry the zing, as also the fact that the facial expressions that Madhuri Dixit used to incorporate as her own contribution to a song throughout her acting career seems to be missing in this 'Ghagra' song, and there seems to be quite a lot of effort being put into place to convey the nuances. For Madhuri Dixit putting an effort into a song has never been a part of her oeuvre for an item number, as whatever have been the steps, Madhuri Dixit used to just glide through any kind of movements and she used to be present in the song and enjoying it. What is lacking perhaps is that her soul is not present in the song?
Could it be owing to the fact that it is the co-star who is quite junior to her in her age that is not bringing in that soul? Remember Madhuri Dixit had acted opposite Rishi Kapoor in PREM GRANTH and even in that flop film, the dance items had stood out? Is this fact weighing her down, or is it that the choreographer Farah Khan has started losing her touch? Or is it a fact that Farah Khan's jumping jhapak of IPL is weighing at the back of her mind as a reference point- the IPL dance item having been aired with the mandate to encourage even those with two left legs to groove to the occasion of the song.
It seems to be something like that, as the song of IPL was aired as a trigger to cajole non-dancers to drop the hair and let go. The simple steps in the song - 'Ghaghra' seem to suggest that. Indeed, a wonderful opportunity seems to have been lost by Farah Khan to create a magic dance number between Madhuri Dixit and Ranbir Kapoor and for Madhuri Dixit the loss is more profound as she is the Diva of dance and her hopes of dancing back into the heart of her fans may not succeed to the desired extent through this song. 'Ghaghra' should not however be the end of the world for Madhuri as one needs to remember that it was one 'Ghaghra' number- 'Cholike peeche kya hai', that Madhuri Dixit carried off with panache and who knows she could do the encore!
