GHANCHAKKAR gets mixed response, RAANJHANAA & FUKREY hits
This week's major release, UTV Motion Picture's GHANCHAKKAR opened very much as we had predicted in our box-office report. Despite big names and banner, the Rajkumar Gupta directed venture could not repeat the success of his off- beat projects like AAMIR and NO ONE KILLED JESSICA.
Rajkumar Gupta's first commercial venture saw a 40 per cent opening across India at the multiplexes with the single screens being lower. The best collections came from the Mumbai circuit and some multiplexes of NCR. Though there was some pick up during the latter shows, it was not substantial enough. GHANCHAKKAR is unlikely to repeat the magic of Emraan-Vidya's last super hit, THE DIRTY PICTURE.
Meanwhile, last Friday's RAANJHANAA saw a magical turnaround in its fortunes after a slowish opening. The Sonam, Dhanush and Swara starrer has netted a good 35 crore (to be validated) during the opening week from India. Given the fact that EROS has released the Tamil version, AMBIKAPATHY, across 300 screens this Friday, and it has opened quite well, RAANJHANAA is a clean hit.
Concluding with Excel Entertainment's Pulkit Samrat, Ali Fazal and Vishakha Singh starrer FUKREY, the film maintained beautifully in the second week (despite RAANJHANAA) and has netted around 29 crore in two weeks, and that makes it two hits in June.
