Priyanka Chopra's new single album: Is it exotic or westernized?
One would not know whether it is an SRK effect in an indirect manner which would have prompted Priyanka Chopra to pair with Pitbull for her new album, exotic (Pitbull was invited by SRK as a part of celebrations of IPL curtain raiser this year in Kolkata), but the album exotic does not have an element of exotic associated with it to make the fans drool over the album.
The video seems to be a clever mix of the album brought out by Jeniffer Lopez and Britney Spears, even to the extent of copying the body suit that J Lo had worn for her number. The lyrics also are inane. Consider the line- Mumbai Cuba baby lets' go... one would not know whether this is a Salman effect or EK THA TIGER effect as Cuba is not a preferred choice for those who want an adventure would like to go.
It seems Priyanka Chopra indeed is following in the footsteps of Jennifer Lopez, as Jennifer Lopez had also partnered with Will.i.am, a venture that was a fiasco, then J Lo partnered with Pitbull and it gave her 2 chart buster songs in US chart. Priyanka's choice of Pitbull could also have been guided by this aspect as well. While Priyanka could draw satisfaction from the fact that her "Exotic" is number 1 song in the India, it is yet to make its presence felt in the US charts.
The rendition done by Priyanka Chopra seems to be guided by the premise that a twanged accent could draw in the fans from the western world but it is not happening so far. Instead of being exotic, it seems more out of place.
For Priyanka Chopra, who has tried to be as hot as possible in the exotic number, if she really wanted to project an exotic look, she should have leveraged on the Indian notion of "hot" and told the world what "hot" is as per the Indian approach and it being an original idea, she would not have been battered by the fans.
May be, if she is planning a new album after exotic, Priyanka needs to do some serious soul searching and seek inspiration from the attributes that the country is blessed and then the world would indeed lap her up.
