John Abraham aiming for Oscars for MADRAS CAFE
MADRAS CAFE is making waves and for all the right reasons. While the box office numbers have been heartening enough for the makers John Abraham and Shoojit Sircar, it has also given them a shot in the arm to hunt for higher glories. If inside information is to be believed, there is some serious planning being done to push the film as India's nomination for Oscars.
"Both John and Shoojit are very serious about that," informs a source, "Last year they missed it when BARFI! was sent instead as a nomination. The disappointment of this miss was written all over their faces. However they want to be well prepared this time around. It is clearly the case of once bitten twice shy. After gaining so much credibility with the film, they want MADRAS CAFE to find added critical acclaim at an international platform."
However the first step in this direction is to find acclaim back home. First stop here would be to gain enough visibility and manage enough noise that ensures that the voice reaches New Delhi for a coveted National Award in the offering.
"Last year, VICKY DONOR has collected three National Awards for 'Best Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment' and 'Best Supporting Actors' for Annu Kapoor and Dolly Ahluwalia each. Now given the kind of topical theme that MADRAS CAFE carries, it is being pitched for Best Film. In addition, it is widely expected that Shoojit Sircar would be in contention for the Best Director (though Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra could well be breathing down his neck as the maker of BHAAG MILKHA BHAAG)," the source adds.
When contacted, John didn't deny these aspirations. "Why shouldn't we aim higher," he says, "Despite the so-called protests and bans, our film has emerged all odds. Other than commercial success, we have seen so much critical acclaim as well. It is rare in today's times, isn't it? So yes, we would love to see recognition coming the film's way at the National level. However, I don't want the film to stop here. I am trying to ascertain how things work for Academy awards nominations. Shoojit and I would love to send MADRAS CAFE as Indian's nomination for Oscars."
Guess this could well manage to erase the disappointment of VICKY DONOR not making it to the highest order.
