How Hrishikesh Mukherjee discovered Jaya Bhaduri? - PART II
Hrishikesh Mukherjee's greatest gift to Indian Cinema is his movies that shall remain immortal as they carry human values which shall be admired for generations to come. However besides his movies Indian Cinema shall also remain indebted to Hrishikeshdaa for discovering the exceptionally talented actress Jaya Bachchan.
How Hrishikeshaa discovered Jaya Bachach is an interestingly tale. Read on....
After the mega success of ANAND (1971) Hrishikeshdaa made GUDDI (1972), a movie focusing on young girls' fascination for Bollywood heroes, a trend even prevalent today. For the movie Hrishikeshdaa was in search of an actress who could look like a teenage and also possess talent. After many rejections he happened to watch a film made by an amateur FTII (Film and Television Institute of India, Pune) graduate and was flabbergasted by the performance of the film's leading actress.
On enquire he was informed that actress was a student at FTII and was pursuing her course at the institute. Hrishikeshdaa could not resist himself and went to Pune to meet her personally. He met the principal and his teacher, incidentally, the teacher was actor Asrani, who since long had been pestering Hrishikeshdaa to cast him in his films but Hrishikeshdaa always nodded and told him to wait. Hence, when Asrani saw Hrishikeshdaa at FTII he was delighted and felt that Hrishikeshdaa had come to sign him, but to his dismay he asked Asrani to call this young actress as he was overwhelmed by her performance and wished to cast her as heroine in his movie. The young actress was none other but Jaya Bhaduri, who was elated at the proposal.
Jaya Bhaduri suited the character to the 'T'. Her flawlessness performance in her debut film fetched her Best actress Filmfare nomination. Interestingly the same year, she won yet another Filmfare nomination for her other film UPHAAR but tragically she lost out to Asha Parekh who took away the Best actress Filmfare trophy for well-deserved performance in KATI PATANG.
Readers would be surprised to know that Jaya Bhaduri was 23-years when she did GUDDI but thanks to Hrishikeshdaa's brilliance and Jaya Bhaduri's histrionics that she looked an ideal school girl!!!
After GUDDI, Jaya Bhaduri and Hrishikeshdaa became so close that they shared a father-daughter relation. The two worked in many movies like BAWARCHI, ABHIMAAN, CHUPKE CHUPKE, MILI etc.
Read an interesting anecdote how Hrishikeshdaa surprised Jaya Bhaduri at her wedding in Glamsham.Com dated July 27, 2013 (Untold tale of Amitabh and Jaya's marriage)
On Friday read about Hrishikeshdaa and the making of his hit film ANAND.
