My name is Anthony Gonsalves ...
Announced Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan in the movie AMAR AKBAR ANTHONY. Any idea who is Anthony Gonsalves? Or is it a fictitious name??
Readers may be surprised to know that Anthony Gonsalves, isn't a fictitious name but it is very much genuine as it represents a 'real' human being, who incidentally was once an icon of Indian Film Music and had taught 'piano' to India's musical maestro Pyarelal of the famous Laxmikant-Pyarelal fame, who as a tribute to his Guru, composed this song.
Anthony Gonsalves was an excellent music arranger and a music teacher residing in Margao in Goa. In Bollywood he is considered as a pioneer into changing the face of Hindi film music by introducing his unique art of orchestrization. His ability to fuse Indian and Western music later inspired many music directors like O P Nayyar, Kalyanji-Anandji, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, R D Burman, Bappi Lahiri etc.
In an interview Pyarelal had revealed how the song got conceived. He said, "Amitabh's name was initially planned as Anthony D'souza, However when Manji (Manmohan Desai) told us that he also has planned a song for the particular character, I immediately intervened requesting, Manji, to replace the surname from D'souza to Gonsalves so that I could pay my compliment to my music teacher. Hearing which Manmohan Desai was moved over and so was lyricist Anand Bakshi, whose pen moved swiftly and the song was ready within seconds both with tune and lyrics and became a super hit.
However it's a paradox that while the world remembers the song, the man who played a pivotal role in developing Pyarelal as a music wizard, is forgotten!!! Today Gonsalves is no more. He passed an unsung death on 18 January 2011 however Pyarelal's song has immortalized him.
