Grand start for GRAND MASTI, HORROR STORY & JOHN DAY lag!

There is a definite market and audience for naughty adult comedies in the overseas, and the most prominent name that one can remember is the legendary CARRY ON series, which many of us have grown up watching and enjoying. Unfortunately, when a similar genre is attempted in India, many critics just dismiss it, though they themselves may have loved the above mentioned series!

To cut a long story short, yet again, as predicted by us, the actual cinema going audience has a mind of its own and gave a grand welcome to Indra Kumar's cheeky adult comedy, GRAND MASTI, the follow up to his hit MASTI.

From the first show itself, the Vivek, Ritesh and Aftab starrer opened to a 70-75 percent start, which was higher with over 90 percent at many centers of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Bihar and Maharashtra. The film picked up further as the day progressed, and is all set for a grand weekend, which may well be amongst the top 5 (weekends) of 2013, thus far!

The other two releases of the week, the Naseer-Randeep starrer JOHN DAY (10-15 percent opening) and Vikram Bhatt's HORROR STORY (20-25 percent start), lagged far behind. However given the horror genre, and the very moderate budget Vikram's HORROR STORY may well be on a safe boat. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about JOHN DAY.

Meanwhile Yash Raj Films has one more reason to smile as their latest venture, SHUDDH DESI ROMANCE, has succeeded at the box-office netting 33-34 crore during the opening week. The other release of the week, Apoorva Lakhia's ZANJEER is a trade disaster, having netted a poor 15 crore in the first week.

Concluding with Prakash Jha's SATYAGRAHA, the film crashed in the second week managing just about 9 crores, thus netting 60 crore (to be validated) in two weeks from India, and will have to rely on non-theatrical rights for breaking even.
