When Amitabh Bachchan was rejected at Talent Hunt contest
Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan as a student participated in college dramas and had a liking for acting. His mother Teji Bachchan, who had interest in theatre supported Bachchan. But the person who played a key role in motivating Mr. Bachchan for trying his luck in Bollywood was his younger brother Ajitabh Bachchan. In the late 60s, a reputed Magazine had initiated a Talent Hunt Contest through which actor Rajesh Khanna got his break in movies. Following year, Ajitabh filled the form for Amitabh and arranged his visit to Mumbai. But unfortunately Amitabh Bachchan failed to make a mark!
After failure in the Contest, Amitabh had to face many more disappointments. When he tried his luck in Bollywood he was ridiculed by film directors for his unconventional looks and lanky personality. Many filmmakers even termed him as 'Lakdi' for thin physique. Later Amitabh's mother Teji Bachchan got a letter of recommendation written by Mrs. Indra Gandhi, the then Prime Minster, who was her good friend, to filmmaker Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, who was making SAAT HINDUSTANI (1969), a patriotic movie on Goa freedom movement with seven newcomers. Bachchan grabbed the opportunity with both the hands and gave such a superlative performance that he went on to win the prestigious National Award as the Outstanding Debutant Award.
