Bollywood Gyaan: When Amitabh Bachchan replaced Dilip Kumar
B. R. Chopra's BAGHBAN (2003) was a super hit film and brought laurels to Amitabh Bachchan for his histrionics. However, do you know that B. R. Chopra had planned this movie way back in the 80s with Dilip Kumar in the lead? But destiny had something else in store for Chopra. In fact except NAYA DAUR (1957) whenever Dilip Kumar and B. R. Chopra came together the result was a failure. Remember DASTAAN (1972) and MAZDOOR (1983)? Hence, Amitabh Bachchan proved a right choice.
However, B. R. Chopra wanted Amitabh Bachchan to pair with Madhuri Dixit, but things did not materialize and he had to settle for Hema Malini. Interestingly, except NASEEB (1982) whenever Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini have come together as romantic couple in the past the result has been disaster. Remember DO AUR DO PAANCH (1980); DESH PREMEE (1982); NASTIK (1983); etc. Hence, B. R. Chopra was little reluctant for the pairing but surprisingly this time destiny turned in favour of Chopra and the movie proved hit.
In fact after BAGHBAN, the Amitabh and Hema pair became hit and the duo again starred in a hit film VEER-ZAARA (2004) together.
