How O.P.Nayyar made Manmohan Desai's career
O.P.Nayyar, 'Master of Rhythm', has been instrumental in shaping the careers of many debutants. It's widely known that he didn't favour Lata Mangeshkar but had a soft corner for her younger sister Asha Bhosle, whom he rated even better than Lata. Prominent among them being the team of filmmaker Nasir Hussain and actor Shammi Kapoor, whose film TUMSA NAHIN DEKHA was partly successful because of O.P.'s music.
Manmohan Desai is another filmmaker who will remain obliged to O.P. His directorial debut KISMAT made him a big name, and the film had hit music by O.P. How Desai's dream project saw the light of the day is an engrossing story. When he decided to become a director, he wanted to launch himself lavishly with a film similar to the musical thriller TEESRI MANZIL. Hence he first approached Nasir Hussain, who didn't approve his script. Undeterred, he approached Shammi Kapoor, but the actor too wasn't keen and came up with an excuse that he will do the film only if Shanker-Jaikishen agreed to compose the music. Shanker-Jaikishen at that time were on top, and were so busy that they had no time to 'waste on a newcomer'.
A dejected Desai was almost on the verge of shelving the project when he met O.P. Nayyar. The composer suggested that Desai make a film with an all-new cast. He also assured that he would compose the music which would make even the high-headed Shanker-Jaikishen sit up and take notice. The film's song 'Lakhon hain yahaan dilwale...' reached the third position in the radio countdown show Binaca Geetmala, ahead of Shanker-Jaikishan's compositions.
The film too did good business and made Manmohan Desai a hit filmmaker.
