Farooq Sheikh buried in Mumbai
Veteran Bollywood actor Farooq Sheikh, who passed away due to a heart attack on Friday night in Dubai at age 65, was buried in Mumbai on Monday with his numerous fans and fraternity people paying their last respects. His body was flown to Mumbai for his last rites. He is survived by his wife Rupa and two daughters Shaista and Sanaa.
The sudden demise of the actor, who had won many hearts playing a simpleton or a common man or often in romantic roles opposite the charming Deepti Naval, had left all his admirers in shock.
"Returned from Himachal last night - to be besides Farooque on his last journey . . . will never be able to say in words what this loss means to me . . ." posted Deepti Naval on her micro-blogging page on Monday.
The two performers, who had tremendous on screen chemistry with their de-glamourised romantic roles and mostly as middle class couples in 80s films, were paired again together in the film LISTEN AMAYA very recently after 28 years.
Farooq Sheikh is best known for his films during the 1970s and 1980s, including those light hearted entertainers directed by filmmakers like Hrishikeh Mukherjee and Sai Paranjape.
His major contribution was in Parallel Cinema or the New Indian Cinema but he equally entertained audiences in commercial movies. He also worked with directors like Satyajit Ray, Muzaffar Ali and Ketan Mehta.
He has acted in many serials and shows on television and performed on stage in famous productions such as Tumhari Amrita (1992), alongside Shabana Azmi, directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, and presented the TV show, Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai (Season 1).
He won the 2010 National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for LAHORE.
Some of his memorable films were UMRAO JAAN (opposite Rekha), SHATRANJ KE KHILADI, BAZAAR (opposite Supriya Pathak) CHASHME BUDDOOR (Deepti Naval), KISSI SE NA KEHNA (Deepti Naval) and the superhit NOORIE (opposite Poonam Dhillon).
