Javed Akhtar's transition from script-writer to lyricist

Ek ladaki ko dekhaa to aisa lagaa...

The superlative description of a girl has 'never' been penned so strikingly in poetic verses as expressed by Javed Akhtar, who landed in Mumbai in early 60s after rebelling from his father, Jan Nisar Akhtar, an eminent poet of Urdu literary world. His father wished Javed to continue the legacy but Javed wanted to become a hero. However, the early struggle phase erased his 'silver screen dreams' and the family's 'gene' of writing finally came to his rescue. Besides, establishing himself as a script writer par excellence, he ruled Bollywood in the 70s along with Salim Khan. Later when he parted ways with Salim, Javed took to his family's legacy forward. But how Javed made transition from a script-writer to lyricist is not known to many.

Actually, Javed had the instincts for poetry as during his struggling phase he had written many lyrics as ghost writer. One famous song that he wrote without taking credit was - 'Apne liye jiyen to kyaa jiye, tuu ji aie dil, zamaane ke liye...' from Sanjeev Kumar starrer BADAL.

However, in 1978 Javed began penning poems for his personal interest and for the mushairas (poet gatherings). Once filmmaker Yash Chopra, a lover of Urdu poems, heard Javed's poem and was so impressed that he insisted Javed to write lyrics for his film SILSILA. Javed initially declined but eventually gave in after Yash Chopra's much insistence. The songs were super hit. This was followed by chartbusting songs from the film SAATH SAATH. Further with the masala number- 'Ek do teen...' (TEZAAB) Javed became a name to reckon as a lyricist.

Winner of Padma Shri (1999) and Padma Bhushan (2007) Javed Sahab has won the Filmfare Award eight times for Best Lyrics. The greatest recognition he received was in 2013, when he fetched the highest literary honor Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu, for his poetry collection Lava.
