How Vijay Anand saved GUIDE from being sleeved!

No words can better describe Vijay Anand, than this philosophical - lyric - from his own master piece - GUIDE - because alike Rosie the path breaking heroine of GUIDE, Vijay Anand, too, was a rebellious director, far ahead of his time, breaking norms and setting trends that the Hindi cinema had 'ever' witnessed! From the art of savvy screenplay to imaginative song picturization to the novel technique of introducing flash back, Vijay Anand in nutshell changed the face of contemporary Hindi cinema. Glamsham.Com pays homage to the genius on his birth anniversary that falls on January 22.

GUIDE, which immortalized Vijay Anand in the annals of Indian Cinema, and wrote its name in golden letter in the hall of fame of Indian Classics - few know, was initially to be sleeved after its English version had failed miserably.

Dev Anand was in dilemma to produce its Hindi version as unlike the run of the mill 'happily ever after tale...' of regular Bollywood movies GUIDE, explored what happens when a love match fructifies. Dev Anand feared its contemporary 'bold' theme might misfire even with the Indian audience.

Hence Dev Anand decided to hand over its directional ropes in the safe hand of his much experienced elder brother Chetan Anand. However distributors backed out due Chetan Anand's poor box-office reputation. Left with no option, Dev approached the young and brilliant Raj Khosla who had directed a gold-mine for Navketan in C.I.D. but Khosla and Waheeda Rehman had a fall out during the making of SOLVA SAAL hence Khosla opted out of the project.

Disheartened Dev was about to wrap the Hindi version when Vijay Anand requested Dev Anand to give him an opportunity. It's interesting that Dev Anand had never considered Goldie's (aka Vijay Anand) name for direction as he felt he was too young to handle the matured theme of marital conflict between husband and wife.

But on Goldie's sincere request Dev Anand nodded. Aware of Indian mindset Goldie rewrote the screenplay of R.K. Narayan's sophisticated and dreary English novel, tying all the loose knots and brilliantly intercepting it with eye catching dance and songs to make it a commercial potboiler. The result GUIDE broke all box office records.
