Priyanka Chopra makes a 'KHAN' tastic revelation
On a regular day, this wouldn't have been expected. However en route to release of GUNDAY, bets were already being placed on how far would the Ranveer Singh-Arjun Kapoor starrer go. As has happened, not just has GUNDAY turned out to be a success, it has also managed to pip the record that was standing in Shahrukh Khan's name for MY NAME IS KHAN. The film has seen a much bigger opening than the Shahrukh starrer and would surpass its lifetime total by the end of second weekend.
While the opening weekend of MY NAME IS KHAN was 30 crore and also the hugest ever for a Valentine's week release, GUNDAY has surpassed that by a major distance. Also, the lifetime total of the Karan Johar directed film was 73 crore and the way this Ali Abbas Zafar film is scoring at the box office, this number should be crossed in its 10 day run.
That is a huge deal indeed for Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor who haves less than 10 films between them and are relatively very new in the industry, what with Priyanka Chopra as the anchor that stood firm.
Traditionally, Valentine's release is not considered to be a major feat, unlike a Diwali or an Eid release. Since there is no national holiday associated with Valentine's Day, filmmakers don't quite plan their film specifically for this time of the year. However, YRF did just that with GUNDAY and have benefitted immensely from it.
While the only other Valentine's biggie in the last ten years has been Hrithik Roshan's JODHAA AKBAR (59 crore), it too stays much behind GUNDAY when it comes to attracting audience in horde. Would this be a realization of yet another major Friday which would be up for grabs in years to follow? Well, one can't be too surprised if it actually gets added to the tally of most desirable release slots.
When contacted, Priyanka said, "Well, in that case we are in elite company. I am a huge fan of MY NAME IS KHAN. For GUNDAY to be spoken about in the same breath is a big deal indeed."
