FILMISTAAN: How AD Sharib Hashmi turned actor

Der aaye, par durust aaye - This could well be true for Sharib Hashmi, who is currently basking in the glory of FILMISTAAN, where he plays the central protagonist. However, not many are aware that Sharib, who also had a small part to play as Shahrukh Khan's roomie in JAB TAK HAI JAAN, struggled to be an actor in real life as well for a good decade and a half.

"I started as an Assistant Director in 1998 with Govinda starrer called HUM TUM PAR MARTE HAIN. After that I got into writing for MTV and Channel V where I worked as an in house script writer. Since I had this acting keeda, I was secretly nurturing a desire to become an actor someday. So sometimes whatever I used to write, I acted a bit in it as well. It was around 2008 when I thought of giving acting a serious shot, so I quit my job. However, for three years nothing happened. Yes, I did a few ads and some promos but I got nothing substantial," recounts Sharib.

It wasn't an easy going for Sharib as soon after, he got broke.

"It was a difficult phase. I had family with a wife and two kids, so I had to again take up a job. This was at Bindass UTV in the programming department. During those years, I had done a short film for my friend called MEHROOMI which went viral on video sharing site. Shanoo Sharma, the casting director from Yash Raj Films, saw it and brought me on board for JAB TAK HAI JAAN. Soon after, FILMISTAAN happened too," he smiles.

Hopefully there would be no looking back for Sharib from this point on as Bollywood indeed deserves a natural talent like him.
