London: Disney plans to develop several stand-alone Star Wars films, as well as the new trilogy, it has been revealed.

Walt Disney chief executive Bob Iger announced that there will be more films than Star Wars fans expected.

"We still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8 and 9 but there are going to be a few other films released in that period too," the Mirror quoted him as saying.

He revealed that the one-off films would be "derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga."

Fans have gone into hyperdrive trying to guess which characters will be featured.

According to a report, wise, green Yoda will be the first to have his own film, and that the films about bounty hunter Boba Fett and gangster Jabba the Hutt will follow.

Iger said that star screen writers Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg would be writing the new films.

Kasdan has already dipped a toe into the Star Wars pool, having worked on the scripts of 'The Empire Strikes Back' and 'Return of the Jedi'.

Both the new trilogy and the stand alone films will be released during a six-year period, starting in 2015 with 'Star Wars: Episode VII'.

It was confirmed last month that Star Trek director J.J. Abrams will direct the seventh installment of the Star Wars epic saga.
