A few years before, Steven Spielberg had plans to make a period film on Lord Buddha's Tooth. Rumormills say that Kamal has gone to the US to meet with some Hollywood bosses to fund this mammoth project. Earlier, Kamal had planned two huge period dramas--'Maruthanayagam' and 'Marmayogi'--which were shelved later due to budget constraints.
The legend on how the Sacred Relic of the Tooth made its way to Sri Lanka is fascinating. It says that the tooth was taken when Buddha's mortal remains were on the funeral pyre. Numerous wars have been fought over it; in 1998, the temple was bombed by LTTE cadres.
