Ilaiyaraaja vs A R Rahman
As musical Puritanism in south India goes, you could either be a slavish devotee of Ilaiyaraaja's music or an ardent fan of A R Rahman's compositions. Arguably, you can never be both, although lesser mortals might simply go for what is pleasing to their ears, and sing hosannas to both.
The music they created is incomparable; so are the individuals. The twain did meet too - Rahman had worked as keyboardist in Ilaiyaraaja's orchestra, and as per lore Ilaiyaraaja, when trying to make himself heard as an independent musician, used to hire instruments from Rahman's father, R. K Shekhar.
For all practical purposes, they both might form a mutual admiration club and pat each other's back. Or not.
Here is a look at the silences that can only be filled in by the two geniuses, who with their music makes us fall in love - with life itself.
