Batman (1989)

Fresh off of the blockbusting success of Beetlejuice, Tim Burton brought his trademark gothic garb to Gotham with this groundbreaking blockbuster. The movie was much darker than anything audiences had seen before; an adult adaptation that took its lead from gritty comics like Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and Alan Moore's The Killing Joke rather than the Adam West TV series that had gone before it. Best remembered for its moody setting, not to mention Jack Nicholson’s eye-popping performance as The Joker, Batman busted blocks to the tune of more than $400 million at the box office, helping to stoke Hollywood’s obsession with superhero cinema along the way.
