MGM's movie channel on Indian cable TV soon
Addressing a media meet here, Bruce Tuchman, executive vice president of MGM Networks, said that carriage of The MGM Channel would be handled by Star Den Media Services Pvt. Ltd., a distribution joint venture between News Corp's Star India and Den Digital Entertainment Network, one of India leading cable distributors.
"The MGM Channel is currently available in India on DTH platform through Dish TV, But our distribution agreement with Star Den will enable us to widen our reach across 70 million homes in India," Tuchman said.
He also disclosed that the carriage agreement entered into with Star Den would help the channel secure carriage on DTH as well as IPTV platforms, which are now increasingly becoming popular in India.
"The MGM Channel's association with Star Den will help accelerate the channel's reach in India's burgeoning cable television market, considered the world's third largest," Tuchman said.
The MGM Channel will telecast round-the-clock movies from MGM's 4,000-title library, which includes 200 Oscar-winning movies.
Tuchman revealed that the channel would also have special programming every week, like Woody Allen's bouquet of movies and the 'Pink Panther' series.
He said that in the coming months the channel would air films like 'Manhattan', 'Network', 'A Passage to India', 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Mystic Pizza' and 'Desperately Seeking Susan'.
Star Den CEO Gurjeev Singh Kapoor said MGM's compelling movies would bring value addition to the company.
"The association will indeed compliment the best of English programming our company offers to viewers in the country," he said.
A 50:50 partnership between Star India and Digital Entertainment Network (DEN), Star Den distributes 60 TV channels in 10 languages through 6,000 cable operators across India.
