The music mogul also revealed which categories judges Gary Barlow, Tulisa Contostavlos, Nicole Scherzinger and Louis Walsh will be mentoring.
Simon called the quartet from Miami, where he is filming the US 'X Factor', to give them the news.
Gary seemed delighted when he was told he will be in charge of the over-28s, with Tulisa equally as positive about working with the girls.
While Louis seemed pleased to be mentoring the groups, Nicole was somewhat surprised that she landed the boys category, but admitted she was confident one of her contestants will win the competition.
